While delivering the third G. Ramachandran memorial lecture in Chennai on 17 December, Jayant Sinha, Union Minister for Civil Aviation, mentioned that the aviation sector is expected to grow to three times its present size over the next decade. The recently announced UDAN offering short distance air services connecting small towns is expected to commence early next year. This will bring into use over 17 under-served airports and 400 unused airports, he said. Such regional services will help launch commuter and feeder services and link remote locations with each other, he added.
Over the next ten years, major airports will evolve into global hubs. Sinha assured that customer services will be improved to ensure comfortable travel and a mobile app will be launched for registering customer complaints.
On the demonetisation scheme, Sinha stated that bank deposits will grow, the tax base will expand and the parallel economy will be compressed. Digital payments will also grow, which is a cheaper option than currency-based transactions.
