Laluís envy, Indiaís pride

The irrepressible Lalu Prasad of RJD could just vent his spleen by commending on the huge reception by NRIs accorded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Sydney: he described Modi too as an NRI!

In the short span of six months Modi has emerged as a global leader winning friends across the globe. Notable of these include Prime Minister’s Shinzo Abe of Japan, Tony Abbot of Australia and President Obama of US. NRIs and friends of India in Sydney did one up over the massive reception organised by NRIs at Madison Square Garden in the US.  Modi made evocative speech, this time in English.

Though Manmohan Singh won the esteem of global leaders as an erudite scholar, prime minister Modi has been winning esteem on his massive popularity and the decisive victory of his party in the Lok Sabha and subsequent state elections promising reforms, minimum government and maximum governance. This is reflected in the ease with which he could get the American President to accept his invitation to be the chief guest at the Republic Day parade in 2015 – this is the first time an American President has accepted this.

Modi should persist with his efforts to channelise such goodwill to take ahead the initiative of the Manmohan Sing government in 2005 to get large investments for stepping up nuclear power capacity in the country. This one measure would trigger a much greater flow of foreign direct investments into India.
