Nagappa Chettiar the leather doyen

2015 marks the birth centenary of A Nagappa Chettiar, an entreprenuer of Chennai who enabled the leather industry to become one of the main growth drivers of the state’s economy.

A book on his life, written by J Prasad Davids, former Secretary, SICCI and a close friend of Chettiar,  was released at the 49th CLRI Foundation Day.

The book is a pictorial travel through the life of Nagappa Chettiar and also the leather industry.

When Indian leather was not allowed to sell directly in overseas markets and had to be sent to auction houses in London, Chettiar took bold to set up shop and sell directly to customers. His several bold endeavours and travel across the globe, shaped the industry to what it is today. His idea of organising an annual leather fair, that he organised at the Central leather Research Institute, Chennai, has today grown to become the largest fair in Asia.  Dr T Ramasami, former Secretary, Department of Science and Technology reminiscenced on the plan to increase the output ten’fold in a single month!

The book traces the evolution of the industry and was released by Dr A B Mandal, Director of CLRI.
