Another Leo of real estate and education is no more

Jothi prakasam aka Leo Muthu initially made his mark in real estate. An insatiable appetite for real estate helped him build a huge land bank spread over the state. After the initial focus on real estate and housing, he focused on education and made an even bigger mark. His Sairam group of educational institutions and the education trusts run 20 institutions that impart quality education from the primary to higher engineering and medicine. The Sairam College of Engineering, the flagship institution, is ranked third among the list of 575 engineering colleges in the state.

These well-run, profitable institutions also set apart a portion of profits for uplifting poorer sections of the society.

Once, over a long chat with me, Leo Muthu explained his meeting with the seer of the Kanchi Mutt Sri Jayendra Saraswati Swami.  Muthu’s mission was to acquire the medical college planned to be set up by the Mutt over a sprawling area near Tirupati. It was a delight to listen to the strategy outlined by him to activate a project in limbo; he seemed to have almost completed the deal and announced his dreams for offering quality medical education to hundreds.

Physically handicapped and confined to wheel chair, Leo Muthu had been active, in fact over-active, right through planning and executing newer and bigger projects. The world of education and real estate has lost one of its bright stars. IE offers its condolences to his spouse Kalai Selvi and children Sharmila Raja and Sai Prakash and to those associated with him.
