Fighter-pilot turned monk...

Born Natarajan, Swami Dayananda Saraswati, a one-time journalist and a fighter pilot, went on to become a monk of the Hindu monastery turning iconic for his teaching of the Gita. His interest in the Upanishads was spiked as soon as he completed his teens and got involved in the Chinmaya Mission.  In 1962 he was christened Dayananda Saraswati and five years later he began delivering public talks spreading the message of Gita and the Upanishads. He conducted three-year residential Vedanta courses first in Mumbai and later in the US.

His teaching centers, now in excess of sixty, offer people of any race the chance to study the Vedas. His most well-known disciple is Prime Minister Modi. The Bhagavad Gita Home Study (BGHS) course is designed by the Swamiji and is used in several countries including Australia, Brazil, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and England. His erudite articles on Hinduism published in the dailies dealt with topical and emerging issues. He attained Nirvana on 23 September 2015.
