Scientist and leader of educational reforms

For over two decades Prof Yash Pal had been part of several committees on educational reforms. An ace communicator and administrator, he had been explaining science concepts in simple terms through the mass medium of television and other platforms.

A committee for higher education set up by the Ministry of Human Resources in 2008 under his chairmanship recommended several reforms in the education system: these included curricular reforms, it opposed privatisation of higher education and cautioned mindless proliferation of deemed universities.

Remember the Chhattisgarh government under Ajit Jogi offering generous incentives for setting up private universities? Yash Pal took the matter to the Supreme Court which declared null and void the establishment of the 112 private universities! How I wished Yash Pal took the case of such reforms of education in Tamil Nadu that had been under the control of politicians and moneybags!

A product of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Yash Pal moved over to Boston and took his doctorate at MIT. A Director of the Space Application Centre of ISRO, he worked on applications of satellite technology for meeting social needs through remote sensing.

Yash Pal was awarded the Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan.  –  SV
