A versatile, humane and efficient administrator/litterateur
PVRK Prasad, one of the most versatile, efficient and humane civil servants who belonged to the Andhra Pradesh cadre of IAS is no more.

Among the most significant contributions of Prasad was made during his tenure as the Executive Officer of the Tirumala Tirupathi Devasthanam during 1978-82. The Vaikuntam Queue Complex that streamlined and facilitated darshan of ever-increasing hordes of devotees at the richest temple of India at Tirumala was conceived and implemented under his leadership. He was also instrumental in erecting the massive idol of Lord Hanuman at the top of the hills.

A renowned litterateur who had keen interest in music and fine arts, Prasad was a friend-in-need of music maestro M S Subbulakshmi and her spouse, the renowned freedom fighter and media magnate T Sadasivam (TS), who founded the popular Tamil weekly Kalki along with Kalki R Krishnamurthy. (Both served earlier Ananda Vikatan with great distinction).

The benevolent founder was quite upset when workers of Kalki resorted to strike and indulged in violence. Sadasivam instantly ceased the publication and closed down the business. The dues for workers and other liabilities were met by selling his sprawling Kalki Gardens in Chetput to Maharishi Mahesh Yogi with the help of C Subramaniam.

The Gardens housed Rajaji and was the venue for hosting the unending stream of VIPs from politics, music, art and culture.

MS and TS moved to a modest, rented premises in Nungambakkam near Valluvar Kottam. Their financial condition was not great.

Prasad reportedly received messages from the Paramacharya of  Kanchi and Sri Satya Sai Baba on MS’ financial distress. An ardent fan of MS, Prasad was keen to be of help and faced the road block of a proud Sadasivam. Prasad conceived an ingenious method that achieved twin purposes: the popularisation of the compositions of the great Telugu poet Annamacharya, persuading MS to render these and presented a handsome royalty of Rs 5 lakh. He was also instrumental in perpetuating the gratitude of rasikas for the contribution of MS who rendered Sri Venkatesa Suprabatham and also the rich repertoire of Annamacharya kritis: a MS’ statue was erected at a prominent place in Tirupathi.

Prasad also served as Media Advisor to former Prime Minister, PV Narasimha Rao. He gelled well with PVN’s literary flavour and modest profile. Prasad also launched the Dasa Sahityam and Alwar Divya Prabandham projects.
