Tribute - R K Baratan

In the early years of evolution of the predominantly family-owned and engineering-focused businesses of Chennai and with modest manufacturing capacities, public relations were almost non-existent. The need, largely, was for some liaison work with the government. Only large public sector companies and a handful of private companies had managers designated for the PR function. 

Gyan Haskar of the Easun group, M Gopalakrishnan of Tube Investments and R K Baratan of DCW took the initiative to set up the Madras chapter of the Public Relations Society of India (PRSI). As part of PRSI, I had accompanied these to expand PRSI in other cities like Tiruchi. Baratan earned a reputation for training in communications as also in public speaking, was a visiting professor at IIT-M and run the BBA, MBA courses in PR at the New College. In the early 1980s I presented him at the Padma Seshadri School, K K Nagar, for a summer camp for children on public speaking. As the President of Sri Sastha Sangam, K K Nagar, Baratan was closely involved with the Ayyappan temple and was also helping his gynaecologist spouse, Dr Chandra Baratan.
