New team at the helm at TANSTIA
THE TAMIL NADU Small and Tiny Industries Association(TANSTIA) represents the interests of small and tiny industrial units of Tamil Nadu. Right from the 1950s the state encouraged citizens to set up industrial units on their own. This resulted in the state accounting for a large number of such units. TANSTIA, over the years, grew in stature and voices the needs and problems of this sector.

In spite of the sector estimated to account for 40 per cent of the output of the manufacturing sector and close to 40 per cent of exports, industrial units in the state have been suffering several serious problems. This has been compounded by massive power cuts in force in the last couple of years. The position has been particularly severe in the last 12 months with all areas outside Chennai suffering 10-12 hours of power cut. K Gopalakrishnan has been elected President and C K Mohan as General Secretary of TANSTIA. They bring with them rich experience of heading the Guindy Industrial Estate Manufactures Association. I remember Gopalakrishnan actively engaged in the setting up of Guindy Industrial Estate Infrastructure Upgradation Company that paved the way for upgrading the infrastructure of the estate. For the first time Chennai Metrowater was entrusted with the task of laying water and sewage lines and the quality of roads was upgraded. These measures were instrumental in transforming Guindy from an old, staid and neglected industrial area to a vibrant commercial business centre.

The sector that was once characterised as priority has lost its sheen, Gopalakrishnan should impart similar dynamism to get for the small sector its due.
