The ‘Ayyo-yes’ is no more

C N Ramdas (CNR) was gregarious and known for his extensive contacts. CNR was a member of the IAS who retired as the Secretary, Ministry of Surface Transport.  Unlike most members of the steel frame, CNR could be spotted in social and business gatherings with his wife. Whenever introduced as a member of the IAS he would jocularly retort Ayyo-yes.

After his retirement, CNR built a flourishing business of consultancy. He was advisor to companies like Mobil, Command Petroleum, Indian Oil Tanking, Cairn Energy,... for establishing and promoting their businesses in India. One of his friends rated his success rate as 9 out of 10.

His neighbour and long term colleague in the Tamil Nadu IAS cadre K P Geetha-krishnan narrated CNR’s disposition to help whoever asked for it: his servant maid requested for help for admission to her niece in a prestigious city college. CNR spoke personally to the principal and got her the seat. Similarly he helped a small local businessman, a saloon proprietor, with assistance to expand. Noblesse oblige.
