Marketing expert Balagopal is no more

For several decades, T A S Balagopal worked for Tata Motors and later Tata Exports. He helped the country expand its export of engineering goods. The presence of Tata Motors in several countries in the neighbourhood and Africa helped expand the export market for Tatas’ commercial vehicles. Later, Balagopal as senior executive in Tata Exports, expanded the export range of Tata products from beverages to chemicals, electronics, leather, toiletries... He headed with distinction the Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC) and extended his expertise to a large number of exporters and also offered his counsel for policymakers.

Balagopal helped implement the Padmanabhan Committee recommendation on including export credit under the priority sector lending (nationalised banks allocate 40 per cent of their lending to this sector). Balagopal kept abreast of developments on the trade front and wrote for IE on expanding trade. In his demise, the country has lost an ardent champion of India’s foreign trade.
