Adharma of opposition politics

A dominant feature of regional politics seems to have spread in full measure to the federal government in Delhi: parties in opposition routinely oppose every move of the party in power. The AIADMK versus DMK tussle over any and every issue has been well-known for decades. Quite sadly such an approach is increasingly seen in Delhi. In this every major political party has to take the blame. Remember, Arun Jaitley eloquently justifying his party’s success in paralysing Parliament over several issues, demanding fervently and frequently the resignation of then Finance Minister P Chidambaram and Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh?

This is nothing new to Congress. Remember the Young Turks in the 1970s and subsequently the shouting brigades of the Grand Old Party disrupting Parliament’s functioning? Mulayam Singh Yadav, Mayawati, et al so effectively copied these tactics. And our witnessing its worst form over the Telangana issue with the traditionally docile southern MPs turning violent?

So the tradition has now become a convention. Now the Congress so effectively stalls several of its own well-thought out schemes. eg: Land acquisition bill, GST bill and the Aadhaar bill. It could have graciously taken ownership of these beneficial legislations and paved the way for governance built on consensus among political parties. One can understand the congenital deformity of a Mani Shankar Aiyar to pour venom and vitriol over anything Modi and BJP do. A Digvijaya Singh, Anand Sharma, P Chidambaram and Jairam Ramesh have routinely joined him with unabashed unconcern.  How eloquently these people advocated the very issues they are now vehemently criticising!

The Aadhar Bill is the first major attempt to deliver the subsidy benefit directly to the beneficiary. Its effectiveness in regard to the LPG subsidy has been proved beyond doubt. In the process it has drastically reduced bogus claims and brought about humongous savings to the exchequer. Extending this to cover fertilizer and food subsidies would fall in line with the UPA government’s desire to contain subsidies. Look at the enormity of the subsidy involved, of over Rs 250,000 crore!

The immediate need is to build consensus on issues of great concern to the nation. Leaders of major political parties would do well to work on this.
