Multi-faceted Venkat

With regret we record the demise of Dr N S Venkataraman. He was multifaceted in the real sense of the word, a renowned teacher,  was ardently involved in social affairs and was unafraid of recording his views on sensitive issues.

Venkat took his doctorate in engineering from the IISc-Bangalore, worked as a senior aeronautical engineer at HAL and for the next three decades worked at the Madras Institute of Technology and rose to the positions of Dean and Director. His extensive contacts were used to get sponsored research assignments for R&D at MIT. Venkat worked for six years at Technology Information, Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) under the Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi. With his close association with TIFAC Chairman Abdul Kalam, he spread knowledge on advanced composite materials technology. NSV had guided 40 scholars for their ME thesis and was a prestigious member of several industry associations like the Institution of Engineers, Aeronautical Society...

The highly caste-driven Tamil society denied Venkat the opportunity to serve as a vice chancellor of the Anna University. We do not have many persons of his attainments, stature and capabilities to adorn the VC’s post.

His family is studded with brilliance. His wife Chellam is a post-graduate in economics, son Dr. Venkat Srinivas, Vice President – Product design and development at Mahindra & Mahindra, was chosen last year to be part of the first Mahindra Future Leaders Programme. His daughter Dr Sudha Nagaraj works as assistant professor at Baylor Medical University, Houston. Venkat was also deeply immersed in Tamil literature and blended these nicely in several of his humorous writings.
