The ‘Jayanthi Tax.’

Remember Jayanthi Natarajan as minister for environment and forests under the UPA 2 government earning  the notoriety for stalling many large projects across the country? Among the principal spokespersons of the Congress party, she was aggressive and often vituperative in TV debates.

Several ministers under the UPA were a law unto themselves; with a few of these charged with corrupt practices. The succession of scandals from the Commonwealth Games, 2G and Coalgate paralysed government functioning and further spoiled the investment climate. In the demoralised state-of-Congress, post the 2014-elections, the not gregarious Jayanthi lost even the limited support from the high command. Quite frustrated,  she quit the Congress and has been unusually quiet since.

The recent raid on Jayanthi’s Chennai residence seems to be a continuation of the bold initiatives of the NDA government to target the big fish. Look at the succession of these: Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Rama Mohan Rao, the highly connected Sekhar Reddy, Karti Chidambaram, T N Health Minister Vijaya Bhaskar, Karnataka Energy Minister D K Shivakumar , S M Krishna’s son-in-law V G Sidhartha .... to mention a few.

In the absence of quick legal action, such measures just provide the TV media short news breaks. The tax department police along with the other investigation agencies,  should help the judiciary hear and dispose of such high-profile cases in quick time.
