Mersal magnified

For quite some time now, I have been pointing to India becoming increasingly divisive. It has become virtually impossible to build consensus on any issue. Not just political parties, but large sections of the population freely jump into the fray, only to be further goaded by news television channels and the social media. Particularly the latter, since a platform is readily available,  to high decibee acrimony. Ludicrous is the fact that even the issues that are taken up are often trivial, like the dialogues rendered by actor Vijay in the Tamil film Mersal.

There is nothing bizarre or faulty in Vijay commenting on government policies. Even the Censor Board gave a clean chit to the film. In that event, why should the BJP make a mountain out of a molehill?

But then, such rationale is often thrown to the winds. Like the time when the Jayalalithaa government blocked the release of Kamal Hassan’s Viswaroopam. The industry needs protection from such protests on flimsy grounds. Ofcourse the controversy helped accelarate box office collections of Mersal to cross Rs 200 crore in quick time, winning Vijay support from Rahul Gandhi and P Chidambaram and many  goad him to enter politics. One more star aspirant to the CM gaadi!
