Tribute – Manikam Ramaswami

“Chief Minister Jayalalithaa should expand the free distribution of fans, mixies, and grinders with refrigerators.” M Ramaswami advocated this in a discussion I had with him at the Thiagarajar School of Management he headed. He explained: “women spent a lot of time on household chores that drain their energies and keep them engaged for hours. The provision of such gadgets can release their energies for productive work.

Ramaswami pointed to the success of his company, Loyal Textiles, in distributing work to rural women to profit. Loyal Textiles, which Ramaswami headed with distinction, has been exporting quality yarn and special garments to several countries.

In an interactive session at Economist House, MR pointed to Loyal Textiles winning awards continuously for six years. He also stated that almost 99 per cent of their turnover came from garments exports.

Ramaswami headed CII, Tamil Nadu chapter and also South Indian Mills Association with distinction and has been voicing the problems of manufacturers and exporters.

Scion of the Karumuttu family of Madurai, Ramaswami had a brilliant academic record graduating from the IIT-M as a  gold medallist in mechanical engineering. He was also chairman of P Orr & Sons, the 171 old company dealing with wrist watches, clocks, instruments... His companies had revenues of Rs 1500 crore last year.

Gregarious Ramaswami's sudden demise at a dental correction has devastated a vast circle of his friends and admirers.
