Waning interest in public discussions…

Chennai metro used to have detailed discussions in public on current and emerging issues. Renowned chartered accountant and Editor-Thuglak, S Gurumurthy, pointed to the Lakshmipuram Young Men’s Association and other bodies doing this regularly, presenting national leaders and to its interest waning in recent years.

Delivering a lecture at the annual Shriram Lecture Series, SG spoke on the state of the economy. He pointed to Tamil Nadu staring at a financial bankruptcy: “the state has become a melting pot. With heavy subsidy burden and high fiscal and revenue deficits, its fiscal position remains vulnerable. We need an alternate leadership culture,”he said.

M Murali Managing Director, Shriram Properties, has been organising this lecture series. With the assets his company handled of around Rs 35,000 crore, he was keen to get the views of the speaker on the realty sector. Gurumurthy pointed to the unsustainability of very high land prices caused by reckless expansion of liquidity through mindless printing of currency notes. He cautioned that it will take time to bring about the needed correction.

IE has been organising special lectures addressed by specialists as part of its efforts to expand awareness on economic issues. Experts presented include R Venkataraman, C Subramaniam Verghese Kurien, G V Ramakrishna, Dr Manmohan Singh, M S Ahluwalia, Rangarajan Kumaramangalam, MTNL’s S Rajagopalan… Through IE Forum Beyond Books such lectures were also organised in several colleges. But costs have soared. Including the dinner, the recent lecture would have cost Shriram a few lakh rupees. LMYA or Chitra S Narayanaswamy’s Gokhale Institute lectures didn’t cost much. Even today, chartered accountant G Narayanaswamy has been presenting weekly lectures on diverse subjects under the auspices of the Rajaji Centre for Public Affairs, the Triplicane Cultural Academy...  There is,  need for more corporates sponsoring such lectures of public interest.
