All eyes on Sankara Nethralaya

Sankara Nethralaya, has catapulted Indian eye-care provisions to global standards. The devotion and indefatigable exertions of Dr S S Badrinath and his team, have helped in the creation of the state-of-the-art facilities for research, education, training and treatment of ophthalmological deficiencies.

Sankara Nethralaya came into existence in 1978 and has grown into a super specialty institution for ophthalmic care, receiving patients from all over the country and abroad. The reputation built by Dr Badrinath is a well-earned one, based on the exemplary eye care offered to large numbers of poor, absolutely free of cost. Sankara Nethralaya has received critical acclaim and handsome financial support over the years. Noted jurist Nani Palkhivala and many other business leaders have bequeathed their life savings to this deserving institution.

Recently, a function was organised by SN to decorate two of its notable benefactors – Deepak Parekh, Chairman, HDFC Ltd with the Sankara Ratna Award and singer Vani Jairam with the MS Subbulakshmi Award. The awards were presented by AM Naik, Group Chairman, L&T. Naik recalled his more than three-decade-long relationship with Badrinath and the hospital since he first came to Chennai for eye treatment. He is now planning to set up a hospital in Gujarat, his hometown  Navsari, South in association with Sankara Research Foundation. The event was also dedicated to Dr B R Barwale Centre for Technology & Innovation, which will apply artificial intelligence technology for early diagnosis of diabetic retino pathology and machine learning in predicting cataract development. Late Dr Barwale was among the earliest staunch supporters of SN. Octogenarian Badrinath interacted with the media and also expressed his gratitude for the munificent support extended by many. Akila Ganesan was the master of ceremonies and Dr Smita Praveen and Dr Prema Padmanabhan introduced the awardees. Managing Director, Medical Research Foundation, Dr K S Vasan, gave a succinct welcome address.
