The sea- saw battle continues...
THE HUGE popularity of IPL is attracting the attention of taxmen and law enforcers. The Delhi Police Special Cell has been scrutinising spot fixing machinations of players and bookies through call intercepts and cross-checking payments made through hawala channels. Ajay Maken as Union Minister of Sports had dared to demand transparency courtesy RTI and a higher degree of control by the government. Of course, the involvement in BCCI of some of the highly influential politicians like Sharad Pawar, Arun Jaitley and Rajeev Shukla and the state associations controlled by the likes of Lalu Prasad and Ajay Chautala made it difficult for a junior sports minister to discipline BCCI.

At the state level, the Tamil Nadu  government is not on cordial terms with BCCI-IPL. It blocked three stands at M A Chidambaram Stadium on grounds of TNCA constructing these without approval from CMDA. Through the court intervention, BCCI succeeded in utilising these for a few matches. Again the Tamil Nadu government raised the issue of the structural certificate obtained through incorrect information.

Having sold tickets for lakhs of rupees, BCCI got a judicial verdict to hold the last of the IPL matches on 15 May. The insistence of the state not to permit Sri Lankan players had to be accepted by BCCI that led to the shifting out two play-off matches to Delhi.

The see-saw battle is bound to continue. BCCI President N Srinivasan, owner of the franchise CSK and who has controlling interests in India Cements Ltd, has been known for his close association with Murasoli Maran and the DMK.
