The power-full Hindujas

Soon after liberalisation of the power sector in the 1990s there was a surge of interest on the part of several large corporates including multinationals, to invest in large additional capacity. Enron hogged the headlines for long on the massive investments it promised on the Dabhol power project. A consortium of German industries led by Siemens evinced interest in setting up a 1500 MW lignite-based power project at Jayamkondam in Tamil Nadu. Hindujas worked on a 1000 MW power plant in Visakhapatnam.

But the policy was not clear. Coal linkages were not established and there were numerous other hurdles from the Centre and the states. The result was the dozens of projects bandied about with great fanfare did not take shape. Hindujas was also among these.

Happily, the Hindujas had persisted with their efforts and have completed the project in Visakhapatnam at a cost of over Rs 7000 crore. Power Minister Piyush Goyal in the NDA government and AP Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu have been helpful in the Hindujas racing ahead with the completion and in getting the project ready for commissioning in quick time pushing back the indecision and lack of urge on the part of the previous regime.

Sadly, the severe cyclone that devastated Visakhapatnam in October caused some damage to this power plant as well. These have been attended to with speed. The plant is waiting to be inaugurated at the hands of the Prime Minister.
