Emerging leader in inverters
S Selvakumar, Chief Executive of Maruthi Power Control Systems (MPCS) explains his struggle in setting up his own business. Selva wants MPCS to be a market leader in select products.

Hailing from an agricultural family in Nagapattinam district, Selvakumar completed his diploma in electrical and electronics engineering. “After completing my diploma course. I joined a manufacturing company in Chennai. Those were the times when I struggled but learnt a lot,” said Selva.

“My job involved travelling throughout Tamil Nadu for clientele. Just Rs 75 was given as allowance and with that I had to look after food and accommodation. As it covered just food expenses, for accommodation I used to sleep at the bus terminals!”

In 1996, Selvakumar started his own inverter manufacturing company. The company has today expanded and branched into manufacturing UPS, solar and security systems. Still the company’s primary source of revenue is from inverters.

MPCS is currently offering solar rooftop and security solutions. Several corporate and educational institutions in the city have availed the security systems solution as well as power solutions. Some of their key clients include Hyundai, MRF, Covansys, L&T, iGate….  “Though we have some large companies in our portfolio, 80 per cent of our clients are the small and medium enterprises,” said Selvakumar. Registering turnover of Rs 25 crore last year, MPCS expects this to increase to Rs 35 crore in the coming year. The company is expecting to emerge as a leader in less than five years and is getting ready to go for an IPO soon.

With the increased purchasing power of the Indian consumer, the power backup industry is expected to register a double digit growth in 2016-17. There are numerous organised and unorganised businesses in the segment. Luminous,

Microtek, Arise, Su-Kam Power Systems, Genus Power Infrastructures,… are the top players in the segment. MPCS is marching towards this league.

Not just income, profits…

Apart from this successful venture, Selvakumar also supports educational costs of around 30 students in Tamil Nadu, every year, through his NGO, Anandham Foundation. Students passing-out of government schools in Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Cuddalore districts are chosen and offered 100 per cent scholarship.

“Around 100,000 students drop-out in Tamil Nadu at the higher education level as they cannot afford it. We not only support them with scholarships, but also assist them with extra-curricular activities of their interests,” said Selvakumar.
