Queen of industrial clusters
Ranipet, around 110 km west of Chennai metro, was the first focussed by SIPCOT for setting up a large industrial area.

With proximity to Vellore and well-connected by rail and road, Ranipet already had a strong industrial base. The large ceramic and fertiliser units of EID Parry and a rich concentration of units producing leather and leather products had made a name for Ranipet decades ago.

The advent of SIPCOT transformed the face of Ranipet. The game changer was the boiler auxiliaries plant of Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL). Hundreds of ancillary units sprang up serving the growing needs of BHEL-Ranipet. The town soon earned fame as the second largest fabrication cluster in India.

Tirumalai Chemicals Private Limited, famous for the ultra marine pigments, is a large manufacturer of pthalic anhydride of Asia and employs around 2000. Major industries in Ranipet include Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Same Deutz Fahr India, Danly India, Greaves, Carborundum Universal, Arcelor Mittal, etc. The town is justly famous for the vast range of leather products. Nearly 400 units engaged in leather and leather goods thrive on a booming export trade. The level of sophistication attained by several of these is world class.
