Kalinga Plant ready to ROLL
The green field steel plant of Tata Steel at Kalinganagar-Jajpur in Odisha is getting ready for commissioning. The first phase of this sophisticated and state-of-the-art facility, built at a cost of around Rs. 25,000 crore, will have capacity for 3 million tonnes.

The kalinganagar plant will produce in phase I ,wide width (up to 2050 mm) hot rolled steel to varying thicknesses. The coke oven batteries will be lit in early 2015; in stages, the blast furnace, steel melting shop and hot rolling mill will be commissioned over the next few months. The mill is expected to reach its full capacity before the end of 2015.

Capacity to be increased to 6 million tonnes

The sprawling complex is gigantic in several respects. By March 2014, concreting of 12.60 lakh cu.m, structural erection of 1.64 lakh tonnes, structural fabrication of 2.12 lakh tonnes and equipment erections of 48,400 tonnes were done. Since then the progress has been even more strident. Prime contractor Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and dozens of others have been busy preparing this large complex for commissioning quick.

The second phase, to take capacity to six million tonnes, involving expenditure of around Rs 15,000 crore, will include additional capacity for coking coal, iron and steel making and hot rolling apart from sintering and pellet making facilities. This phase is expected to be ready within the next three years. The plant has elaborate facilities for captive power generation, raw material handling, railway lines, connectivity with the port and zero liquid discharge.
